Your pavers are looking dull. The color has faded, and every time you spill a little liquid, it absorbs straight through. You aren’t sure whether the weeds or the stains are sprouting up faster.
Is there any hope of preserving your pavers? Or are they a lost cause?
Paver sealing is a heavily debated topic, but it definitely has its perks. Aside from adding protection against stains, it also guards against the harsh elements and reduces weeds.
When your pavers are unsealed, they are vulnerable to:
- UV rays
- Water erosion
- Chipping
- Cracking
- Fading
- Deep stain penetration
The sealer also locks in the sand between paver joints, creating even more protection. Without sealer, the sand around your pavers remains loose and lets in bacteria, mold, mildew, and plant life.
What is a Water Based Paver Sealer?
Our particular paver of choice is a professional-grade water-based product that is sprayed or brushed over your outdoor paver surfaces, including your:
- Patio
- Pool Deck
- Driveway
- Lanai
At Premier Pro Wash & Seal, we always use equipment to spray an even coat of our sealer over all of your pavers.
As the product dries, polymers fill in the pavers’ pores and adhere to the clay, creating a semi-permeable membrane. This layer adds security to the safety of your pavers by allowing liquid to leave but not easily enter.
With this paver sealer applied, you can worry less about damaging your property and enjoy your time spent outdoors.
However, these sealers cannot last forever and little by little foot and tire traffic, as well as sunlight, rainwater, and wind will wear away the coating.
Because we apply future coats over previous ones, the second and third application of our sealer will last longer than your first sealer service.
When the sealer fails, water no longer beads on the surface — Instead, it immediately soaks in. If water can do this, staining liquids can too. Once the sealer has worn away, your pavers are in jeopardy.
Ideally, you shouldn’t wait until the sealer wears off entirely. You want to maintain consistent protection that will safeguard your pavers from everyday damage.
But just how long should you wait between applications?
Time to Seal Your Pavers
If you recently installed new pavers, we recommend you wait at least 60 days before you have them sealed. Some people wait a few months to be safe. The reason is efflorescence.
Pavers contain natural salts and when the salt mixes with water, it forms a cloudy film on the surface called efflorescence. We can remove the stain easily if the pavers are unsealed; However, if you rush to seal your pavers and then efflorescence strikes, there’s a chance the sealer may need to be stripped off to treat the stains
Your first application of sealer will last about two years. The first time, the sealer primes the surface of your pavers and strengthens the next paver sealer application.
Once you seal your pavers regularly, we can seal your pavers every 2 to 3 years. Driveways will require more frequent sealing because of the high traffic they receive, so prepare to apply a coat to those every 2 years.
